This is a deep dive into the cost of the current healthcare system in the United States, and what the costs would be for switching to a single payer system. We look at what it is, and the cost of the most detailed plan that is currently being discussed – the plan put together by the team led by Bernie Sanders.
Single payer healthcare is also referred to as Medicare-For-All, or M4A, even though single payer would not be like medicare is today. We discuss the projected costs and discuss why studies may be underestimating the costs of the M4A plan.
We also point out some of the reasons that we may not want to do nothing, because the current system has some serious shortcomings, the worst of which is that 27 million Americans have no medical coverage today, and that costs are rising much higher than inflation. The current system may be unsustainable, and changes probably will need to be made.
